Sapphire, brithstone for September, gift for 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries Perfect for jewelry.

Sapphire is the ultimate blue stone. The word Sapphire means blue. Can be found is many different colors, spectacular yellows and oranges, vivid pinks and lavenders, and soothing greens. These different colored Sapphires are referred to as "fancy" color Sapphires.

Sapphire is one of the most durable gemstones. It's sister stone Ruby is red corundum; all other members of this mineral species are galled Sapphire. Most prized Sapphires are from Myanmar (Burma), Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The Australian Sapphires are a darker blue with a green green undertone. Origin can have a significant effect on price. If you are purchasing a Kashmir, Burmese, or Ceylon sapphire, that should be noted on the bill of sale. A beautiful and rare variety called padparadscha (a type of lotus flower) is also in demand. It should exhibit a pink and orange color simultaneously. The purer the blue color the greater the price the gemstone can command, however, many like the darker hues of Sapphire. As you can tell, Sapphire is a most versatile gemstone.
It is the symbol of the heavens, guardian of innocence, bestower of truth and good health, preserver of chastity.

Sapphires are a hard stone, easily placed in any setting, and comes in all different shapes. It is a 9 (1-10) on the Mohs' scale. It can be placed in an ultrasonic cleaning machine.

As with any gemstone you should be careful of fraud. Techniques have been devised to improve the color and removed a type of flaw (needle inclusions) to create a "Ceylon" sapphire that never came from Sri Lanka. As always, buying from a reputable jeweler is paramont, as well as having your stone double-checked by a qualified gemologist-appraiser.
