Beaders often buy beautiful beads and then are stumped for ideas.

Beads, beads and more beads. That’s what you see when you walk into a bead store. Log onto any bead website, more beads! Which ones do you buy? What are you going to make with them? How are you going to put them altogether? Where do you start? Your confidence starts to plummet as the overwhelming anxiety of where to start takes over.

Let’s face it we’ve all been there at some stage. How do you move to the next stage? Ask an expert! People make a living off making jewellery, ask them.
As a new beader you might look at, for example, a reel of wire, and wonder what you could do with it. I offer this advice to you. Simply ask the retailer to show you how to use the wire and give you ideas on what to make.

A retailer who makes and sells their own jewellery, and sells all the beads, chain and findings that they use, are the best people to buy from. That way at least you know where to find all the supplies to make that particular jewellery piece.

A reliable and trustworthy bead retailer will encourage questions and happily give you free advice, if it means traffic to their store.

If you are a beginner you should be able to select the jewellery piece you would like to make, then contact the bead retailer asking what beads, head pins, eye pins, chain and other findings you will need to make that item. Better yet, they should be able to send you instructions, on how to make that item.

For those of you who have a little more experience up your sleeve in beading, have a look at what jewellery takes your fancy. Study it, bit by bit. Then go off and collect the goodies you will need to make that item. And don’t forget, if you get stuck, ask the experts.

Some people are not very good at visualizing the end product. You may look a range of beads you think might look great together, but can’t actually picture how they will look as a finished jewellery piece. So go the other way; find the jewellery piece, then choose the beads. At least then you know what it is going to look like!

Don’t spend a fortune on beads you are not going to use. Buy in smaller quantities to ensure you use the lot. You might save by buying in bulk but think of the money you lose when you have left over beads sitting around idle. Small quantities of different beads mean you end up with lots of unique jewellery pieces and no wastage.

What you should buy in bulk are the findings. Findings like head pins, eye pins, jump rings and crimps are things you will use over and over again. No matter how unique your jewellery pieces are, chances are you have used the same findings to put them together. So save money by buying these items in larger quantities. Then you have more money available for beads.

A professional bead retailer will also be willing to share with you their expert hints and tips. Often these hints and tips will save you time and money. Why spend money on a new gadget when an item laying around the house can do the same job? Save the money for beads, the fun stuff!

Starting a new hobby or interest can be overwhelming. Learn from the experienced experts in the industry and enjoy your new hobby from day dot. Go on, ask them now.
